Let’s be honest… growth hacking sounds more complicated than it really is. It’s not a trick or some secret hack that magically blows up your business overnight. It’s just a smarter, more experimental way to grow as a business, extra points if you’re a startup with limited time, budget, or team.
Instead of spending months and a fortune building a huge campaign, growth hacking helps you quickly test small ideas, see what works, and then repeat. It’s creative, fast, and just as good as any other strategy.
What is Growth Hacking?
It’s basically a way for startups (or any business with limited resources) to grow fast without needing a massive marketing budget. Growth hackers are usually the people who work behind the scenes in fast-moving environments while trying to figure out creative ways to get a product more attention without spending a lot of money.
That means thinking outside the box and focusing on what actually benefits the business, not just short-term sales. A big part of it is listening to your users and shaping the product around what they actually want.
So, what’s the difference between growth hacking and regular marketing?
Well, traditional marketing usually involves long planning cycles, big campaigns, and a general focus on awareness and brand recognition. It’s generally slower and more expensive.
In contrast, growth hacking is quick. If something works, you double down. If it doesn't, you move on to the next thing. It’s pretty much the “let’s wing it” version of a business strategy. To be honest, it’s no surprise that startups love it.
Should you use growth hacking services?
If you’re trying to do everything by yourself, growth hacking can start to feel a little overwhelming.
You can always seek some support if you’re in a slump. Using growth hacking services (usually agencies or freelance experts) can save you lots of stress and guesswork, especially if you’re not sure where to start or don’t have the time to run constant tests on your own.
Instead of figuring everything out from scratch, you get someone who’s done this before several times and knows exactly what to do. In my opinion, it’s a solid way to move faster and for you to focus your energy on building your product, while they handle the rest.
Like with every strategy ever, there are always some techniques to make everything more efficient. But if you feel like you can do it yourself, here are some tips that helped me see the light at the end of the tunnel when I had no choice but to be on a budget.
Don’t wait until launch day to start growing. One of the easiest growth hacking techniques is to build a waitlist, even if you don’t have a full product yet.
For example, create a simple landing page, explain what you’re offering, and give people a reason to sign up early (like early access, a discount, or something exclusive).
This helps you build an email list, test your messaging, and start your launch with a real interest instead of crickets.
Referrals work because people trust their friends more than ads. Set up a basic referral system where your users get something in return for inviting others. It could be premium access, perks, or whatever makes sense for your product.
It’s a smart and low-cost way to bring in new users without spending extra money on ads. Plus, it scales. One happy user can bring in five more.
Usually, people want what they can’t have. Creating FOMO, like limited spots, time-sensitive discounts, or invite-only features, is a proven growth hacking move. It even works on me!
The key is to keep it real, though. If you say something’s limited, it should actually be limited. Otherwise, it loses impact fast.
Not every audience is on Instagram. Find where YOUR people hang out! Maybe that’s Reddit, Discord, a Slack group, or even a forum, but you should get involved. Not to spam your link, but to actually help your potential customers.
Answer questions, give feedback, and when it makes sense, share your product. Don’t try too hard. It’s going to be slow at first, but, from my experience, it brings loyal users who actually care.
Your product can market itself if you build it right. Add features that naturally encourage people to share and invite others. think “invite your team”, “share your dashboard”, or “made with this tool” watermarks. You’ve probably seen this before (Notion, Dropbox, Calendly… they all do it).
If you’re building something and trying to figure out how to grow without it taking a lot of time, money, and people, I totally get your struggle. There’s no perfect formula.
But that’s exactly why growth hacking works. You can grow without a big team or a perfect plan, and these growth hacking techniques are proof of that. Try what makes sense for your business and stay consistent. You’ll get there.
