Creating urgency is still one of the most powerful marketing strategies that brands and companies can use to attract more customers. In a period when consumerism has become a popular trend, brands need to find approaches and strategies that can draw more customers to purchase different products or services.

Users see everyday advertisements and social media posts about limited-time offers that are especially created to trigger a sense of urgency. And what can be more attractive than urgency in marketing? - The Scarcity principle.

Using scarcity in your marketing strategy can prompt customers to act now rather than later because maybe later that product or service will no longer be available.

What Represents Scarcity & Urgency In Marketing?

Scarcity represents a marketing strategy that triggers the customer's fear of missing out in order to encourage them to purchase different products or services. Brands use this approach to attract more people and increase their conversion rates.

On the other hand, urgency marketing helps brands reach their goals quickly by creating deals and promotions that encourage immediate action from customers. Common examples include: “Expires in 3 hours”, “Today only”, and others.

These two are powerful psychological triggers that are used in marketing strategies in order to convince users to take a desired action, especially to make a purchase. They are both used to trigger the FOMO feeling, also known as the fear of missing out, which indicates that users tend to appreciate more those products or services that are limited in quantity and available for a short period of time.

Why Scarcity Principle & Urgency Are Important In Marketing Strategies?

Scarcity, along with urgency in marketing, represents two effective factors in the marketing strategy because they are able to trigger the FOMO feeling for users. Also known as the fear of missing out, this feeling causes users to impulsively buy certain products or services in order to avoid the eventual loss.

Users become more motivated to purchase when they feel that they are about to lose something valuable. So, when using a scarcity or urgency strategy, users have a higher chance of purchasing, increasing the brand’s conversion rate based on limited-time offers.

These two marketing tactics will significantly speed up the user’s decision-making process because, instead of overthinking a purchase, customers will take immediate action. In order to make sure that these strategies are implemented correctly, try to create messages such as “only a few items in stock” or “the last hour of discounts” in order to increase the number of marketing sales

Best Practices For Urgency & Scarcity Implementation

These are two powerful techniques that can significantly increase marketing sales, but when used incorrectly, they can quickly lower the brand’s credibility in the eyes of potential customers.

  • Try to avoid the fake urgency feeling: Some websites choose to put every product or service on sale for a long period of time. To create urgency, these websites often communicate the opposite, giving the impression that nothing is indeed a deal, and it will lose credibility in customers’ eyes.

  • Create convincing call-to-action messages: a well-written CTA should be able to express the real benefit of a certain product or service, and at the same time highlight the sense of urgency or scarcity. Try to create a CTA that indicates the remaining stock of a certain article to trigger the scarcity feeling.

  • Offer limited-quantity products: try to release some products or services that have a limited quantity, in order to make customers feel that if they purchase them, they will eventually be part of a small, valuable community.

  • Implement early-bird discounts: the early-bird discount stimulates users’ quick actions because it offers an impressive discount for those who purchase a certain item earlier. This strategy is able to significantly increase sales and, at the same time, can estimate the initial interest. Festivals and conferences usually offer early-bird discounts in order to see how many people are interested in it.

Scarcity and urgency in marketing are two powerful strategies for gaining more sales, and they effectively work because they trigger human feelings. Brands need to make their offers appear limited and exclusive, whether in size, access, or quantity, to change hesitant shoppers into loyal customers.

So, try to implement one or multiple strategies, but moderately, to attract more customers and see what performs best for your target audience.
